A Home Safety and Accessibility Evaluation should be personalized to you and conducted by a skilled professional who can link your needs with your abilities, interests,  and environment. Occupational therapists are uniquely trained in this area.

Research shows that a Home Safety and Accessibility Evaluation performed by an occupational therapist:
  • reduces the likelihood of you being admitted to a nursing home or other long term care facility
  • allows you to be able to do more in your home
  • increases the chances of you participating more in your community
  • reduces the likelihood of being readmitted back to hospital

Home Safety & Accessibilty after injury or illness

An injury or illness may alter your ability to function in your home enviroment. For example:
  •  you may not be able to negotiate stairs,
  • get in and out of the bathtub,
  • on and off the toilet easily, or
  • you may need others to assist you.
If the environment is not set up to meet your needs  you may need more help or the caregiver may be at risk of injury.

A Home Safety & Accessibility Evaluation allows the occupational therapist to identify:
  • adaptive equipment
  • wheelchair accessibility needs
  • home modifications  and
  • different techniques.
These are aimed at increasing your independence and safety at home.

This will involve:
  • an evaluation in your home with you and your caregivers (if appropriate),
  • collaborating with the contractor and
  • training with your and your caregiver (if appropriate) after the modifications are completed.

Aging in Place

  • Most Americans over the age of 45 want to live in their own homes as long as possible.
  • Aging in Place refers to you being able to continue to live in your familiar home environment safely and as independently as possible for as long as possible.
  • To be able to age-in-place successfully it is likely that you may need to make some modifications to your home.

A Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) will be able to help you identify common solutions to barriers that might impact your safety and accessibility.

Having an occupational therapist as your CAPS specialist brings another level of training and skill that takes your unique abilities, body mechanics and interests into account.
